Near miss for deaf students
IT would have been a disaster had the canteen ceiling at the School for the Deaf in SS5 Kelana Jaya fell three minutes earlier.
Fortunately, the children finished their meal at the canteen and returned to class three minutes earlier when the asbestos ceiling came crashing down.
The incident, on Thursday (July 17), was the second such incident in the school within two years.
According to headmistress Saadiah Ahmad, no one was hurt in the latest incident as the students had used another door to exit the canteen.
“We have about 30 students in this school and I'm worried for their safety,” Saadiah said when met at the school on Wednesday.
Danger from above: Loh and Saadiah pointing to the canteen ceiling that came down. “The last such incident was in 2006 when the corridor ceiling on the upper floor crashed. Now it's the canteen. I've made my reports to numerous parties, including the Selangor mentri besar's office, but have not received any response so far,” she said.
“So not knowing who else we could go to, we had no choice but to again seek the assistance of former Kelana Jaya MP Loh Seng Kok, who is familiar with our predicament,” Saadiah said.
According to Loh, who met up with Saadiah, the school is a non-profit, private institution mainly for deaf students and is registered with the Education Ministry.
“This school has been operating since 1994. Previously, it was under the Selangor and Federal Territories Association for the Deaf, but it is now under the Malaysian Federation for the Deaf,” he said.
Loh said he would get the Education Ministry to send officers to see the plummeted ceiling and hopefully, they could do something about it.
“The issues licences for schools to operate and the safety and security of students are among the requirements before a school is given permit,” he said.
Loh said that as the deaf school was sharing the building with the Sekolah Sri Nobel, he expected the building management to repair the ceiling.
The management is said to have carried out repairs when the corridor ceiling fell the last time.
“This incident happened last Thursday, a week ago, but no action has been taken so far. I just hope that maintenance by the building management will be regularly carried out,” Loh said.

Masalah hilang pendengaran akibat kebisingan tempat kerja membimbangkan
— BERNAMA

Deaf Malaysian artist Leon Lim poses beside his work “Silent Story,” a multimedia installation, at the World Financial Center gallery in New York.
By Cathy Rose A. Garcia
Staff Reporter
Being deaf should not be seen as a hindrance to pursuing one's dreams ― if anyone is living proof of this, it is deaf Malaysian artist Leon Lim.
The New York-based artist wants to spread his message of hope through his art, which will be part of the "thisAbility vs. Disability'' exhibit at the Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul in July.
In an e-mail interview with The Korea Times, Lim said he was surprised to learn that there are not many opportunities for deaf people in Korea. This is why he wants to invite deaf Korean students to see the up-coming exhibition and hopes to increase public awareness of deaf artists in Korea.
"It seems to me that deaf people in Korea might not have opportunities to do artwork to express their concerns about their lives, community and society. … In Malaysia, people always think deaf people can't become teachers of deaf children. But in my studies, I think deaf children need deaf adult role models," he said.
Lim believes deaf children should be made aware of the opportunities that are available to them and learn that they can be doctors, lawyers, artists, pilots and engineers if they choose to.
"With my project, I would like to contact deaf schools to bring their students to the museum and learn about my talent, abilities, artwork and success story. I am sure that deaf students would say, "That artist is deaf! I am deaf too! I can do this! I thought I can't do this because people said I can't do this." That is a very common experience deaf people have around the world, including the U.S.," he said.
However, his plan of inviting deaf students has hit a snag. He has tried contacting people involved in deaf schools in Korea through email, but has received no response.
"I believe Korea has deaf artists who produce artworks but they don't have chance to show their works to the public. China and Japan have deaf artists publicized. They donated their high-quality artworks to several universities in the United States, especially Gallaudet University and Rochester Institute of Technology's permanent collections," he said.
Lim was one of 15 international artists invited by the Total Museum of Contemporary Art for the exhibition. He is currently working on a multimedia installation art work, "Discommunicativeness." The title is not an actual word in English, but Lim's own created word.
The installation will involve flashing questions and answers on a board, whenever someone moves the computer mouse.
Some of the questions include: "Would you love me if I was deaf?" "What would you do if I have hearing loss?" and "Can you learn sign language for your lover?" Answers include: ``Yes why not?""I think I can't" and "I love you, we love you." Some of the sentences will be translated into Korean.
A native of Alor Setah, Kedah, Malaysia, Lim said his deafness developed is ability to have a strong visual sense.
"As a child, I liked going to a music/book shop. I discovered colorful prints covering music cassettes. I was attracted to the colors and this brought me to the art world. Since I don't have the ability to hear, my eyes are more sensitive to other things, compared to people who can hear
His art works include paintings, sculptures, architecture, graphic design, multimedia, installations and photography. Lim said he often explores themes of heritage preservation, social segregation, interactive communication, identity and culture in his art works.
Lim will visit Seoul in July for the exhibit, which will be the first time his works have been shown here.

Nowadays, the designers like to try to help the disability person with their creative idea, it make them take a challenge to to create new product/gadget which can support the disability community..I found one interesting gadget for Deaf from the blog; "Yanko Design". I let you all can try to see how about this Shake-Up headphone can used fpr deaf community..
Designer: Pierre-Antoine Bouzard

The gift of hearing is one of those we all take for granted everyday, and designer Pierre-Antoine Bouzard is contributing his part to help the deaf of the world share and “feel” the gift of music. His headphone design called “Shake-Up!” is intended to use vibration to basically pound the crap out of deaf people’s heads. I would imagine that would feel like strapping a vibrator to one’s head.. I think that it is more like cool fashion style for the deaf person can enjoy to wear headphone when they are shopping or etc.. But, a deaf person can feel the vibration when the people walk near him/her? Or it is used for listening the music from anywhere or what? This Shake-Up headphone design don't have many functions..I think that music to deaf people is all about same vibrations only! They need to understand different of sound 'music' if they wear one?

What you think about this product - "Shake UP"? :P

In the world, there are the deaf community which live in the silent life and shared with the hearing people.. they are not just being deprived of music, a sweet whisper and a simple phone call. They are also lacking the ability to be fairly warned of impending danger from out of sight sources. Designers Kwang-seok Jeong, Min-hee Kim and Hyun-joong Kim really have a great idea to created this inspired design, so it would most certainly save deaf's lives.

Their concept:
Vibering is created to enable deaf people to sense noises that are emitted in the rear. It is almost impossible for the hearing-impaired to detect noises behind themselves and beyond their sight. For example, they fail to take notice of a vehicle's horn somewhere at the back or a friend's alarming cry; this often results in an exposure of unforeseen emergencies. Vibering consists of two rings and a wristwatch. The ring enables the bearer to feel its vibration when there are any specific noises at the rear. The noise-detective signal of the ring is set to identify precise information from the wristwatch window at the same time.

"“Vibering” is an ingenious way to help the deaf, by fashionably housing a sound detection and identification system to be worn as a pair of rings and a wristwatch. The rings are to be worn on both hands and are the ears that not only listen for sounds emanating from behind, they also determine distance, position and vibrate according to source. The wristwatch aspect, identifies the sound wave and present this info to the wearer in an easy to read display. The watch is programmed to listen for certain key phrases from humans like “Excuse Me..”, your name being called and any number of car noises including the most important one, a car’s horn. This device concept could not just be a major life enhancer for the deaf" - YankoDesign Blog.

I think that it is very great gadget for deaf community.. I really like this stylish ring and wristwatch because it can help deaf people to sense noises around them. For example, the vibering sensor can make the Deafs to notice vehicle’s horn or someone’s call at the back which often results in an unforeseen emergencies...Vibering sensor not just an alarm unit for hearing-impaired, but also can be stylish fashion~ :D
